MapInfo / Forestry Users Meeting - 2/26/03

This first, MapInfo/Forestry Users Group organizational meeting was held on Wednesday, February 26, 2003 at the Roseburg Forest Products offices in Dillard, Oregon. The meeting started with all participants introducing themselves and sharing their diverse backgrounds. Currently all participants are actively using MapInfo to assist in maintaining timber inventories on tree farms covering up to several hundred thousands acres. The group brought with it a wide range of experiences in older mapping software programs including PAMAP, Intergraph MGE, Atlas GIS and CAD based systems. All agreed the capabilities currently offered by MapInfo surpassed those provided by the other software.

Robin Harkins of Roseburg Forest Products demonstrated the ColorPalette utility received from the Northwest MapInfo Users Group coordinated by Schlosser Geographic Systems, Inc.  This utility assists in evaluating and selecting colors, and allows you to compare how colors appear on the screen vs. the printed output.

Tony Cooley presented the new Map-In-A-Box program by Mapping Solutions, LLC. and demonstrated how it may be used by geocoding the locations of the OSU Log Buyer Database and performing drive time analysis from fictitious timber harvest units.

Needs and wishes of future User Group meetings were discussed and the meeting concluded with a tour of the Roseburg Forest Products GIS Facilities.
